We used to have more diversity in flagstone colors in our yard. The color of natural flagstone depends on:
- natural material (limestone, granite, quartzite etc.)
- naturally present impurities
Nature creates diversity in colors and shades by the combination of impurities present in the stone.
Limestone flagstone is usually grey, but there are many shades of grey.
Limestone flagstone colors:
- light grey,
- bluish grey,
- just grey,
- dark grey,
- buff,
- almost black,
- brownish,
- yellowish
- yellow
- off-white
Quartzite flagstone colors:
- rusty brown,
- purple,
- pink,
- light blue,
- blue,
- dark blue,
- bright white,
- greyish white,
- bluish-white,
- yellow,
- orange, etc.
Granite is a complex rock. It contains feldspar, quartz, and mica. Feldspar can be of different colors, and granite color depends on which feldspar is present. Quartz and mica add luster to the beauty of natural granite. Granite is often multicolored
Granite flagstone colors:
- grey
- pink
- red
- brown
- yellow
- white
- black
The same flagstone may look different when wet compared to its dry condition.
Flagstone colour may change with the weather exposure. Recently quarried flagstone's colour may change with time due to the change in the iron and other metals salts in it exposed to air, humidity and sunlight. After extraction, the stone enters a different environment than the one deep in the earth.
Also, light conditions influence your perception of flagstone colours. The same limestone flagstone may look either grey or buff under the sunlight of different intensities in various weather conditions. Some quartzite flagstones change their colours dramatically under UV intensity in light. Artificial light also changes the perceived colour of the stone.
