Sod

Our sod is for pick up in Barrie only

We cannot deliver sod anymore: manual unloading sod is hard for people of our age. I think you understand. Take your friend or family member to our yard with you to pick up sod if you cannot handle the rolls yourself. Your self-service helps us to keep the sod cheap.

In summer, we sell sod on a "first-come, first served" basis and do not put it away for anybody.

In the fall, you can prepay your sod (in person or over the phone at 705.728-5448.), and we will put it away for you. If you prepaid your sod, please, come on time to have your sod fresh; otherwise, we are not responsible for the spoilage.

When is the sod available?

Once it is warm in spring, we start selling sod. Usually, our supplier brings sod by 11 a.m. unless it is too wet to harvest it. To keep sod fresh, we order an amount we can sell before it is spoiled.

In summer 2022, yard pick-up hours are from 8 am to 5 pm, Mon to Fri, and 8 am to 3 pm Sat and Sun. To have the most recent info about yard visit hours, please, check the Contact page of this website. The hours of seasonal yard operations are listed there.

The best way to find out if sod is available in our yard right now is by calling our yard at 705.728.5448. Call persistently as the yard phone is busy this time of year.

I work online from home and don't have the access to the quickly changing situation with sod availability.

Our sod characteristics

Instant lawn, green color. Usage: to create or patch a lawn. There are 9 square feet in a roll. A full skid will contain 85 rolls, so cover about 765 square feet. To find out how many rolls of sod you need to cover an area, divide the area square footage (length times width) by 9. For example, the area is 12 by 10 feet: (12 x 10): 9 = 13 rolls.

A roll of our sod is 16'' wide and 7' long.

How to install sod?

1. Prepare clean and fluffy soil. Garbage in the soil can create air pockets, which can lead to slow or no rooting. Compacted soil does not let the roots grow, and your sod will struggle to thrive. Loosen at least 2 inches of the existing soil. If it is poor, then put some fertile soil on top. Rake and level the area, otherwise, the water will not be evenly spread, and some plants will not get enough.

2. Install your sod. It is better to lay the sod the same day it is delivered, especially in hot weather. Water each roll of sod as you lay it if it is extremely hot. Generously water the new sod to completely soak it. A squishing sound when you walk over the sod means the first watering was right. Remove any air between the sod and the soil.

3. Keep watering your sod the same way at least 2 times a day until it takes root.

We do not install sod. We only sell it in our yard.

How long does it take for the sod to take root?

On average, it takes 2 weeks. Try to pull up on a piece of sod. If you feel it is not just laying loosely on the soil but connected to it with the roots in the ground, intensive watering is no longer required. Reduce watering gradually to the normal schedule for the season.
