Natural quartzite

Quartzite definition and origin

Quartzite is a hard metamorphic rock which was originally pure quartz sandstone. When subjected to heating and pressure, sandstone, a softer rock, changes into hard quartzite.

Quartzite durability

It is very durable: 7 on Moh's hardness scale. It is harder than glass and harder than common steel. You can easily scratch glass and even steel with a sharp piece of quartzite.

Is quartzite a natural stone ?

It is! Native Americans used knives and spear tips made of local natural quartzite long before Europeans came to American continent. But I think one can make quartzite of sandstone if recreating temperature and pressure conditions occured during the tectonic processes that caused metamorphosis of sandstone to quartzite.

We sell natural quartzite.

Aquarium safe rocks

Unlike limestone, quartzite is pretty inert. That's why quartzite rocks we sell can be used for aquarium hardscape: background, caves, and other structures.
