SUPER SHADE LS, grass seed 10lb

2kg and 10lb bags are available.

Lawn mix for medium to heavily shaded areas

In the picture, you can see a nicely grassed area. There is no direct sun here at any time of the day. The house creates a dense shade from the South. From the other side, the row of maple trees shadows the area. There was no result from previous attempts to grow grass in this place. I took the picture in Barrie ON on the 30th of June, 2018, a month after sowing the seeds, SuperShade LS. This lawn is still doing pretty well.

We have been selling SuperShade LS since 2017. It is in great demand, and we did not have any negative feedback about this mix.

The composition of Super Shade LS

Shade-tolerant and hardy grasses:

  • 30% Creeping Red Fescue,
  • 20% Chewing Fescue,
  • 10% Poa Trivialis, and
  • 40% Slider LS Perennial Ryegrass.

Our SuperShade LS mix contains 4 different types of grass to adapt the mix to various conditions. They are super spreadable.

Some types of grass work better if a shady area is on loam & clay soils; others prefer sandy soils in the shadow. Some thrive in the moist shady spots; others are drought-tolerant and shade-tolerant at the same time. Altogether, the mix works well in the shadow with a variety of other characteristics.

This composition ensures dense shade tolerance and high turf quality with incredible lateral spreadability and top-rated wear tolerance of the grass. The dense and fine-bladed turf recovers in highly used areas much quicker than other shady grasses.

Growing grass in shady areas with SuperShade LS

It is easier to create proper conditions for any grass growing if sowing it in the fall time. In spring, the soil dries up too soon under the sun and winds, and the soil temperature might be too cold for germination. Still, you can start growing your SuperShade LS lawn in spring. The best soil temperature for germination of SuperShade LS seed is between 50 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit (10 to 25 degrees Celsius). It is usually so when the day air temperature is between 60 to 87 degrees Fahrenheit (16 to 30 degrees Celsius).

SuperShade LS needs 12 to 22 days to sprout (depending on the soil temperature and humidity). It means you need to keep the soil moist for 12 to 22 days by gentle watering (with preventing measures against the seed washout from the soil). You can even cover the spots that dry up too quickly with a perforated transparent plastic film to accelerate germination. But do not keep the film for too long.

Make sure at least six top inches of the soil are black enough, with no clumps or garbage (especially plastic), and drain well. Level the soil with a rake. Ideally, the soil surface should be horizontal (check it with a level). Otherwise, the water will run off the seeded area and wash out the seeds. If the soil is not sandy, add some sand to the top layer. If you are growing SuperShade LS on a slope, take extra care to keep the moisture from leaking out. For example, add some coir or another moisture-retaining agent to the soil. Most of the SuperShade LS mix seeds are tiny, so do not bury them deep. Just spread the seeds evenly over the surface and cover them with a thin layer (1/8 inch) of sandy soil.

90% of the success is good soil preparation at the start, correct sowing, keeping the soil moist during germination, and mowing properly in summer.

Do not mow at least a few weeks after germination until the grass matures. The lawn can be mowed when the smallest grass of the mix is four inches tall. Mowing your SuperShade LS lawn lets it spread around and create thick turf. Do not overseed the turf in summer. Instead, mow it frequently, but cut only about an inch off, leaving 4" or longer from the ground. This way, you stimulate the lawn thickening. You can overseed, if necessary, in the fall. When well-established, the turf is pretty tolerable to wear in more sunny areas and less tolerable in shadier areas (the ones that have 2 hours of sun during the day.) For healthier and stronger grass in the shadiest areas (2 hours of sunlight), try not to mow it or mow very little after the grass spreads around.

Other turf maintenance actions: weeding, watering and aerating. The need for weeding and watering will be close to zero once SuperShade LS gets established. If the soil is not good enough, fertilize (moderately) with high-nitrogen, low-phosphorus fertilizer. Do not overwater and overfertilize, especially in the shadiest areas. The turf does not consume too much water and nutrients there as the grass's metabolism intensity in the shade is lower than in sunny areas. On the other hand, if the tree roots are close to the grassroots, the trees can consume the water and nutrients from the soil. Act according to the situation.
