Grass pavers and gravel pavers: how to install?

For car parking, the installation of grass pavers and gravel pavers is straightforward. You can also find the videos online on it.

Preparing a proper base for heavy vehicles requires more effort. We provide detailed installation guides on request. Essentially, heavier traffic requires the same base as stone interlock pavers.

Here is a general guide on how to install grass pavers. Please follow the necessary steps:

Planning

Begin by measuring and marking the area where you want to install the grass pavers. Consider factors such as drainage, slope, and any necessary permits or regulations.

Excavation

Clear the marked area by removing any existing vegetation, rocks, or debris. Excavate the soil to a depth accommodating the paver thickness, usually around 4 to 6 inches (10 to 15 cm). Ensure the surface is level and compact the soil.

Base Preparation

Add a layer of crushed stone or aggregate as the base. This layer provides stability and helps with drainage. Spread and compact the base material to achieve a firm and even surface. Aim for a thickness of around 2 to 4 inches (5 to 10 cm).

Geotextile Fabric

Optionally, you can lay geotextile fabric over the compacted base. This fabric acts as a weed barrier and helps with soil separation and stability.

Paver Installation

Begin laying the grass pavers according to the manufacturer's instructions. Typically, each paver has interlocking tabs or slots that allow them to connect firmly. Ensure the pavers fit tightly together, forming a solid and uniform surface.

Cutting and Trimming

If needed, use a saw or paver cutter to trim the pavers to fit the desired layout or accommodate curves and edges.

Filling

1. For grass pavers: once all pavers are installed, you can fill the cells with a suitable growing medium, such as topsoil or sand, or mix of topsoil with stone aggregate. This will provide a base for grass seed or sod to take root. Ensure the growing medium is evenly distributed and level with the top of the pavers.

2. For gravel pavers: fill the cells with a clear stone aggregate, like HPB. Level the surface like in the picture below.

Seeding or Sodding (skip this step for gravel pavers)

For grass pavers: depending on your preference, you can either sow grass seed over the filled cells or lay sod. Follow the appropriate steps for seeding or sodding, including watering and maintenance instructions.

Maintenance

After installation, regularly water and care for the newly seeded or sodded grass pavers area. Follow proper lawn care practices to ensure healthy grass growth.

Gravel pavers require hardly any maintenance. If your gravel paver area requires snow ploughing, install Heavy-Duty Ground Grid rather than Hanpave.

Remember, the installation process may vary depending on the type and brand of grass pavers you choose. It's always recommended to consult the manufacturer's guidelines and follow any specific instructions provided with the product. On request, we can provide detailed recommendations with specifications for our HDGG installation.
